Species: Microsorum pteropus
Origin: Southeast Asia
Type: Fern, bare root
Ease of care: Very Easy
Light: Low to High
As with Java Moss, Java fern is very easy to take care of and requires very little light. They reproduce from offshoots on the leaves and take nutrients through the roots and leaves. Java ferns best grow with exposed roots. Many aquarists tie these to driftwood and rocks and often these plants do extremely well in this set up. Thriving java moss greatly benefit from increased iron in the aquarium. Once tied down, they will eventually attach their roots to the rocks or driftwood that the plant is attached to. These ferns can grow quickly in ideal conditions with plenty of light and nutrients. Three or four java ferns can fill a 20 gallon tank with growth and new plants in under a year given the right conditions. Dwarf shrimp use the roots and many leaves of java ferns as cover for hiding.
